Drabble: What They Don't Know

Title: What They Don't Know

Author: badly_knitted

Characters: Jack, mentions Torchwood

Rating: G

Spoilers: Slight for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Fragments, Exit Wounds etc.

Summary: The people of Cardiff are very good at ignoring things they don’t want to think about.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: For the prompt ‘They Don't Know’, one of the prompts I didn’t get around to using for tw100’s challenge 292: Billboard Hot 100 last year. I’ve dug them out again to supplement the prompts I got from my f-list, just because there are still loads I wanted to use.

There are dangers to be found in the back alleys of any city: thieves, muggers and worse. Cardiff’s no exception, but on top of the expected dangers, it has its own unique set of hazards that most people somehow manage to remain blissfully unaware of.

It amazes Jack, the way Cardiff’s citizens go about their lives rationalising or ignoring things that would shock anyone else.

Creatures in boiler suits, rooting through dustbins are dismissed as kids in masks. Even blowfish driving sports cars are shrugged off.

It’s left to Torchwood to ensure that what they don’t know doesn’t hurt them.

Then again they probably do know and just take it as the norm around there.

great story.
Some of them might know, or at least suspect, but I suspect a lot would simply bury their heads in the sand, metaphorically speaking. They just don't WANT to know.

Thank you.
They do tons for the ones who don't know and they also get hurt and lose so many things ... even though when it is their choice.
They're unsung heroes, but them they don't do it for fame or acclaim, they do it because someone has to and most of them have been affected in some way by aliens.

Thank you.
Loved this. I always assumed that there were some people who knew about Torchwood, but the vast majority of people just sort of rationalized it all.
I think a lot of ordinary people just prefer NOT to know, they keep their heads down and ignore anything they don't understand. People are good at rationalizing things and just not seeing what's right in front of them.

Thank you!
Great use of the prompt :-)
Thank you! I was browsing the old Last Of The Summer Line episode title prompts and this one jumped out at me, it's just such a simple way of explaining wht=y Torchwood is needed, even though the Cardiff citizens have no idea how much good they do.
So true!
But I think and hope that the people of Cardiff, deep down, know and are grateful to TW.
They probably know more than they let on.

Thank you!
