“Last call!” Dee’s voice rang out across the noisy, crowded bar and several people hustled over to get in a final round before closing time. He joined Ryo, dispensing drinks, taking money and making change. The majority of the clientele at McGinty’s Bar were cops, since the 27th Precinct was only on the next block, making it a convenient hangout after work.
He and Ryo had a good life. Three days a week spent teaching at the police academy, and running the bar the rest of the time. Taking it over after Terry McGinty passed away two years ago had been one of the best decisions they’d ever made; it kept them in touch with friends old and new, while leaving them plenty of time to enjoy other pursuits. They had a regular bartender and a couple of part-timers, but still liked to do at least two evenings a week behind the bar, chatting with the regulars and catching up on news. Both of them were pushing sixty, and though they were still a whole lot fitter than most men their age, it still felt good to take life at a slower pace.
They just weren’t ready for retirement yet.
