“D’ya ever think about what might be out there?” Dee asked, sprawled on his back on a blanket, hands behind his head, staring up at a night sky filled with billions of stars.
“Out where?” Ryo murmured drowsily. “In the woods?”
“No, out there.” Dee extracted one hand to point vaguely overhead. “In space. I know the scientists and astronomers have never detected any signs of life, no radio signals or whatever, but earth can’t be the only inhabited planet. It’s just one tiny speck amongst millions. Somewhere there’s gotta be other forms of life.”
“It does seem probable,” Ryo agreed. “What would be the point of having so many stars and planets, in so many galaxies if life evolved on only one planet orbiting one ordinary star?”
“Exactly! Somewhere far across the universe there could be aliens right now on some other world, lookin’ up at the stars and wonderin’ if any of them are shinin’ their light down on another inhabited planet.” Dee fell silent, just gazing upwards into the heavens, deep in thought. Finally he spoke again. “Kinda makes me feel small, insignificant.”
“I know what you mean.” Ryo shifted, turning onto his side and propping himself up on one elbow to look down at his partner by the dim light of their campfire. “You’re not insignificant though, not to me. You are the sun in my sky and if there are aliens out there looking up at the stars, I hope they’re with someone they love as much as I love you.”
Dee smiled, reaching up to brush a wisp of hair out of Ryo’s eyes before pulling his lover down for a tender, lingering kiss. “If they aren’t then I feel sorry for them. Everyone should have someone special to share moments like this with.”
