“Sheesh!” Dee leaned on the horn, but it did no good; the cars in front resolutely refused to move. “Now what?” It wasn’t even rush hour, but it was bumper to bumper. “Goddamned New York traffic. We’re gonna be late!”
“Will you relax?” Ryo sounded almost amused as he glanced at his partner, fuming in the driver’s seat. “I’ll go find out what’s causing this; don’t go away.”
“So not funny!” Dee scowled. “Nobody’s goin’ anywhere right now; that’s the whole problem!”
Smirking, Ryo unfastened his seatbelt and opened the car door; there was just enough room between Dee’s Charger and the car in the next lane for him to slide out.
Dee sat in his car tapping his fingers impatiently on the steering wheel and watched his partner making his way along the line of cars, until he vanished out of sight behind a van. He was back a few minutes later, slipping back into the passenger seat.
“Well? What’d you find out?” Dee demanded as Ryo closed the car door.
“There’s a truck broken down blocking the intersection. Couple of the guys from Traffic are doing their best to direct everyone around the snarl-up it’s caused, but it looks like we could be here a while.”
Dee dropped his head onto the steering wheel with a groan. “The old badger’s gonna have my hide if I’m late again! Hell, he’ll probably bounce ME back down to traffic duty, and this time it’s not even my fault!”
“Don’t be such a drama queen; he won’t do that.”
“Oh no? What makes you so sure?”
“I called him on my way back, told him we’re stuck in traffic but we’ll get there as soon as we can and make up the time at the end of our shift.”
