Ryo’s mouth watered; maybe it was self-indulgent, but he felt he deserved a treat. It was barely mid-morning and he already felt as though he’d put in a full day’s work.
Some days, being a cop was all about filling in the requisite paperwork, making phone calls, reading autopsy and evidence reports in the hope of finding possible clues. On other days there’d be a new crime scene to investigate, and friends, family members, or colleagues to question, either in their homes or at the precinct.
Then there were days like this when it was all about the legwork, canvassing for witnesses, tracking down potential suspects, pounding the sidewalk for hours on end…
Suddenly realising Ryo was no longer walking alongside him, Dee stopped and turned back to find his partner staring longingly through the window of a small bakery. He mooched back to stand beside him. “Earth to Ryo…”
Dee snorted. “Thinkin’ out loud now?”
Ryo started. “What?”
“You said ‘lemon cheesecake’,” Dee said with a grin. “Gotta say it does look really good,” he added. “We’re about due a break anyway. There’s a coffee shop across the street; why don’t I go grab us a coffee while you get us a couple slices each to go. We can sit in that little park to eat it, take the weight off our feet and enjoy the sunshine.”
“Sounds great,” Ryo agreed, pushing the door to the bakery open. Everyone deserved a truly decadent treat now and then.
