Food was always in short supply at Mother Lane’s orphanage; growing children had huge appetites, and seemingly hollow legs considering the amount they could put away.
Most of the youngsters handed into her care came from poverty; skinny, undernourished waifs in need of a few good meals, and Mother always did her best to provide, feeding them up, watching them fill out and flourish, but it was often difficult making ends meet. Sometimes she didn’t know how she’d manage if it weren’t for Dee.
He was enough to make any mother proud. Oh, he’d given her more than her share of sleepless nights when he was younger, but just look at him now, showing up on her doorstep, arms laden with bags and boxes of food! There were times she felt guilty for accepting his generosity; surely he should be saving for his future, yet she felt certain he spent every dime he could spare on the children. She’d never asked him to, and never would; it was his own idea and she was grateful beyond words. Because of him no child within her walls ever went hungry.
She thanked God for bringing Dee to her all those years ago.
