“It’s only for one more day,” Ryo said reasonably, trying to calm his partner down.


“Nuh uh, not happenin’, I’m done with this!” Dee’s voice was so loud that Ryo flinched, pulling the phone away from his ear. He could still hear the other detective as clearly as if they’d been in the same room rather than in different parts of the city. “They’ve been tellin’ me ‘one more day’ for the past week! I’ve already been here way too long; I’m goin’ crazy! You have no idea what it’s been like; I can’t take it anymore!”


“It can’t be that bad…” Ryo started.


“Oh no? You try wakin’ up at four in the mornin’ to find cockroaches tapdancin’ all over what passes for a bed! They’re the size of mice, and when I got back here tonight there was a gigantic rat in the shower! I swear it came up the drain. This whole fuckin’ building needs to be fumigated, or better yet, torn down. There’s no way in Hell I’m spendin’ another hour here, never mind a whole day!”


Ryo sighed. “Fine, I’ll talk to the Chief, tell him the operation’s a bust.”


“Thanks, bud. I owe ya.”
