Standing beneath the shower spray Dee groaned in pleasure, tipping his head back to let the water run down his face and chest, cooling him as it went. “Ohhhh, that feels good!”
“Move over and make room for me,” Ryo said, climbing over the side of the bath and trying to get a share of the cool spray Dee was hogging. “I’ve been dreaming about this practically all day!”
The hot, dry weather had left them feeling sweaty and uncomfortable for most of the afternoon, canvassing for witnesses out in the blazing sunlight. An all too brief interlude resting in a small, shady park, and splashing water on each other from a fountain had kept them from either spontaneously combusting or melting into a puddle, Ryo wasn’t sure which, but the relief hadn’t lasted for long. In the end, only thoughts of what awaited them at the end of their shift had kept Ryo putting one aching foot in front of the other.
Now, squeezing alongside Dee beneath the shower spray, feeling the cold water soaking his hair and cascading down his back, he sighed in relief. It felt better than good, and he closed the plug so that the cold water would fill the tub, soothing his aching feet.
Tomorrow the forecast was for even higher temperatures, but with luck they wouldn’t have to spend half the day pounding the sidewalks. It had been a waste of time and effort anyway.
All that mattered right now was cooling off.
