Drabble: Mystery Meat

Title: Mystery Meat

Author: badly_knitted

Characters: Owen, Gwen, Team

Rating: G

Written For: Challenge 299 – Green Eggs and Ham at tw100

Spoilers: None.

Summary: Owen buys lunch for the team.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: No offence meant to animal lovers everywhere. Blame the prompt.

Returning to the Hub after a weevil hunt turned out to be a hoax, the team came across a bustling farmers’ market.

Stalls displaying fresh fruit and veg vied with those selling fancy cheeses, handmade chocolates or preserves. One section was devoted to meat of all kinds, from beef to buffalo, chicken to ostrich. Sausages and burgers sizzled on barbecues, filling the air with mouth-watering aromas that made their stomachs growl.

Approaching a stall, Owen bought burgers, handing them out.

Gwen took hers dubiously.

“What is it?”

“Reindeer.”

“I can’t eat Rudolph!”

“Just kidding.”

“Oh.”

“It’s kangaroo.”

“Bastard!”

Owen smirked.

The End

Comments

Owen - that was not nice. YOu should have told her it was sewer rat!
I suspect he was really just teasing Gwen and it was actually beef - after all, he bought burgers for everyone, lol!

Maybe he should have told her it was a Cardiff delicacy - Weevil.

Of course, Gwen could have simply checked out what that particular stall was selling...

(It WAS originally going to be Tosh instead of Gwen, but I didn't want Owen being mean to Tosh).

Thank you!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Owen was only teasing. After all, he bought himself one as well!

I eat meat occasionally, but I wouldn't eat reindeer or kangaroo any more than I'd eat horse or guinea pig. Which makes me wonder why some animals are seen as acceptable to eat and others aren't...
Love wicked humor Owen and his choice of victim is perfect. Ianto would not be impressed, Tosh doesn't eat meat from unknown vendors and Jack would go back for seconds while talking about the best way to cook dinosaur.
LOL! Very true! I like to think Owen was just trasing Gwen and what he bought were perfectly normal beefburgers. Or maybe even veggie burgers!

Thank you.

well done Owen!
They were ordinary beefburgers, but Gwen believed him! Owen is taking lessons in being sneaky from Ianto.

Thank you
I personally don't eat kangaroo, but it is suppose to be good for you, very high in iron, low in saturated fats,- but it is a very maroon red colour and a very strong smell, never could get a bit close enough to chew on. - I can't think of anything worse that eating a strong flavoured meat, also its part of our coat of arms and it's skippy.. great story
I think that just 'It's Skippy!' would be enough to put me off, without the colour and strong smell, lol! I grew up watching Skippy (among other shows), nibbling on a childhood hero is just wrong in so many ways o_O

Thank you.
Hehe poor Gwen.

I personally dont eat meat but I often wonder why people who are quite happy to eat cows pigs sheep chickens etc wont eat other animals?
Well, I still think Owen was just pulling her leg.

I don't know, it seems to be custom in some respects. we are happy to eat what we grew up eating, but other things seem outlandish. I couldn't eat horse od guinea pig, but they're perfectly acceptable in certain countries. Same goes for a lot of other things. Different countries have different things that are traditionally eaten. I don't eat a lot of meat, but I tend to stick to what's familiar.
Owen is a bastard LOL although I must admit Ostrich is very tasty as is Crocodile, never had Kangaroo though.

Great drabble
I think Owen was pulling her leg.

Nevrr tried anything other than the everday meats available in Britain, lol, I'm not very adventurous!

I've been told kangaroon is a very strong smelling meat but high in iron. Can't say it appeals to mer though.

(I'd never get an ostrich in the oven...)
That sure sounds like something Owen would do. Reminds me of what parents said to girls in grade school, "The boys pick on you because they like you." That seems like Owen's mentality most days. :-p

Very true.

Then again, I think Owen likes winding Gwen up. She gets angry so fast.

Thank you.
no comment!!
lol
LOL!

Owen was just teasing Gwen, they were really just beefburgers!

Thank you.
Owen, you are evil. And I love it.
He really is, but I can't blame him, Gwen is such an easy mark, so gullible. She never even looked at the sign declaring the burgers were made from 100% organic free range beef, lol!

Thank you.
hee hee :)
*giggles* Thank you!
