Ianto bowed deeply. “It is an honour and a privilege to meet you, your Eminence,” he said, using Galactic Standard. Naturally the Hekkarti didn’t know any Earth languages. Why should they? Earth was a proscribed planet. The only reason the Shadow Proclamation had permitted a small contingent of Hekkarti, including the Emperor’s son, to visit was because a certain item, long believed lost, had fallen through the Rift and ended up in Cardiff.

Noble Vilneuve of Hekkar-Liall made an equally deep bow of his own. “The honour is mine, Noble Ianto of Jones, as is the privilege of retrieving my family’s long-lost property from your beautiful world. I only regret that the Shadow Proclamation will not permit me to see more of it, but their rules are necessarily strict.”

“For your safety as much as our own, your Eminence. The people of Earth might find your appearance alarming.”

“I imagine so.”

Vilneuve was a six-foot tall blob standing on a dozen tentacles, and draped in an ornate robe.

The visit was brief; the Hekkarti’s property was handed over and they teleported back aboard their ship.

Relieved, Ianto removed his nose plug. The Hekkarti were charming people but they smelled awful.

The End

Comments

Ouch. Ever diplomatic Ianto would be scrupulously careful not to show any discomfort. He knows about and has learned to get used to some strange differences. The nose plug shows just how on the ball he is.
Ianto always does his research and is prepared. He likes the Hekkarti, they're very civilised and pleasant people. It's not their fault they have an odour humans find unpleasant.

Thank you!
