The hardest part of their jobs as homicide detectives was having to break the news to the victim’s family and friends. No matter how many times he’d done it, Ryo had soon learned it never got any easier.
Looking back, he’d been lucky; he’d learned of his parents’ deaths not from a stranger but from his aunt, his father’s youngest sister. She’d hugged him, comforted him, made him a cup of tea, and sat with him, and while that hadn’t made the news any easier to take in, it had made it less… overwhelming, because there was someone he loved beside him who knew what he was going through. He’d lost his parents and Aunt Elena had lost her brother.
He wished he could do more to help the families he spoke to deal with the shock. They’d look at him, bleak faced, their eyes begging, ‘Lie to me, tell me it’s not true, tell me my father/mother/husband/wife/son/daughter,
All he could do was get justice for them.
