Travelling to New England for the fall colors had been a Maclean family tradition. Ryo couldn’t remember a single year when he and his parents hadn’t made the drive north for a few days of hiking in the woods, enjoying one of nature’s most entrancing spectacles.
Ever since they’d been killed, Ryo had kept up the tradition, making the trip by himself. It was his way of remembering the good times, and he never felt closer to his family than he did when he was surrounded by majestic trees decked out in their fall splendor.
This year, for the first time since he was eighteen, he wouldn’t be alone, even if his travelling companion was less than enthusiastic.
“What’s so special about a bunch of trees anyway?” Bikky grumbled, annoyed at being dragged away from his friends for four whole days.
“Fall in New England is one of the most beautiful sights imaginable,” Ryo explained patiently. “I came every year with my parents and now I want to share it with you. Will that be such a terrible ordeal?”
“D’you miss your parents?”
“All the time, but going to the places we used to go together makes me feel closer to them, like they’re watching over me and they’re pleased I haven’t forgotten.”
Two days later, Bikky stood beside Ryo on a ridge top, staring out across treetops in every shade of yellow, gold, copper, red, and bronze.
“Wow!” he breathed, awed by the sight. “You weren’t kidding! I never knew leaves could be so many different colours!”
“Still sorry I dragged you out here?” Ryo asked, smiling.
“Nuh uh!” Bikky shook his head. “I just wish Carol could see it.” He raised his camera, snapping some pictures.
“Maybe next year she can come too.”
“That would be so cool!”
