Leaning against the railing, looking out across the water, Dee was keenly aware of being watched; the old cop instincts kicking in.
“Don’t look now,” he whispered to Ryo, leaning beside him, “but we’re bein’ watched.
“Hm?” Ryo murmured vaguely, miles away, enjoying an ice cream. Dee had finished his already.
“Bunch of girls on the bench to my left. Think they’re workin’ up the nerve to come talk to us.”
Ryo frowned slightly. “Why?”
“’Cause we’re two seriously hot guys?”
Before Ryo could reply, egged on by her friends, one of the girls, who all looked to be in their late teens, got up and came over.
“Excuse me, but… are you two models?”
Dee peered over the tops of his sunglasses at her, emerald green eyes sparkling in the sunshine.
“Nope, sorry; we’re just a couple of plain old New York cops, enjoyin’ your fair country.”
“If the cops around here looked like you I wouldn’t mind being arrested. Seriously, you look like you should be in the summer casuals spread of a fashion magazine. My friends and I were wondering when the photographers would get here.”
Dee laughed, nudging Ryo. “Hear that, babe? How’d you like to be a fashion model?”
“Standing around all day being photographed? Not my idea of fun.”
“How ‘bout if I was the photographer?”
“Didn’t we do that already?” A blush crept across Ryo’s face.
“Yeah, but that was without clothes; not quite the same thing.”
Blushing as furiously as Ryo, the girl scurried back to her friends, giggling.
“Think she got the picture?” Dee asked innocently.
“Graphically,” Ryo groaned, burying his head against his arms, folded on the railing, his ice cream forgotten in his hand.
“Aw, c’mon, babe! She asked if we were models; what was I supposed to say?”
