Drabble: Illusive Alien

Title: Illusive Alien

Author: badly_knitted

Characters: Ianto, Owen

Rating: G

Written For: Challenge 300 at tw100

Spoilers: None.

Summary: Some aliens prove harder to catch than others.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: For the square Swan/Deception

Torchwood had been chasing an alien through Cardiff’s streets for what felt like half the night, and probably was. It had eluded them numerous times, despite Tosh directing them via CCTV.

That was probably due to it constantly changing shape so they never knew what they were looking for, Ianto reflected.

He and Owen finally cornered it by the lake in Bute Park, quickly netting it before it could escape again.

“How did you know that one was the alien shape-shifter?” Owen demanded.

Ianto gave him a withering look.

“Is your eyesight that bad? Swans don’t usually have three legs.”

Ha, ha! I think Owen needs to take a break--he's clearly working too hard if he missed that. Good thing detail-oriented Ianto was on the case as well. :D

Yay--another series from you with fun titles, a la the "Elusive/Adhesive Butterfly" series. I can't wait.

In Owen's defence, it's the middle of the night and he wasn't looking at the number of legs, that didn't occur to him. He was looking for a more obvious clue, it wasn't the only swan there.

Not quite a series as it only has two parts. So far. I suppose it's always possible that will change. The other part, though, is part of my second run at the challenge so you'll have to wait to see what happens until I finish posting my first run. Probably, I should have posted this one last but... Well, obviously I didn't, lol!

Actually, this one started off as an accidental second fill for the Swan/Purple square - the fake swan was originally purple - until I realised that the shape shifting alien idea had been penciled into my Swan/Deception square. I was going to leave it, but then I would have had to come up with another idea for the square so I gave it three legs instead. A tripod swan, lol!

Thank you.
LOL! Sure Owen hasn't been drinking on the job? Hard not to notice 3 legs...
I don't know, it's night in a poorly lit park, several swan's mingling - would you be counting their legs to see if any of them had extras? It's not the first thing that would come to my mind and in a group, it often looks like they have the wrong number of legs anyway, lol!

There was no guarantee that the alien WAS pretending to be a swan. It could have been impersonating a duck or a goose, or it might not even have been there anymore. That's the trouble with shape shifters, you don't have any idea what you're looking for. Ianto of course notices details like that. ;)

Thank you.
I wish I had Ianto's eyesight! mine is quite poor!
So is mine, but Ianto (my version anyway) has perfect eyesight and sees everything!

Thank you.
Haha u need to be more observant Owen. Great drabble
He does try, but counting legs isn't something he does automatically. Should we be worried that Ianto notices immediately? Does he count legs everywhere he goes?

Thank you.
Thank you!

I'm hopefully posting the follow-up to this one later today.
*grins widely*
*grins back* Thank you, I'm planning to post the sequel to this one in a bit.

Great last line :-)
*grins* Thank you! I jotted down ideas in the prompt table, had this one down for Swan/Deception and then accidentally wrote it with the swan purple, which meant it fitted the wrong prompt, one I'd already written a fill for. I needed to change it so it fitted the prompt I'd originally intended to use it for so I added an extra leg. ;)
I think it's perfectly understandable that Owen missed the third leg. This is, after all, the entirely wrong kind of "bird" for its legs to be attracting his attention.

Oh, that's so true. If they were scantily clad women I'm dure he'd know exactly how many legs were on view and would probably have them graded.

Thank you.
Well, for Ianto it is - Owen didn't think to count legs!

Thank you.
