“People these days don’t have a clue,” Dee said dreamily.
“Huh?” Ryo looked across at his partner. “What about?”
“Anything! Look at ‘em, rushin’ about, measurin’ themselves by how much they have; money, expensive cars, flashy designer clothes, every gadget that’s ever been invented, but are they happy? Nah. They’re miserable; they’ve got ulcers from stress, and all the money they’re makin’ doesn’t mean a damn thing because they’re never satisfied.”
“That’s true,” Ryo agreed. “I mean, I like knowing I’ve got some money in the bank, that I can pay the bills and afford a vacation every year, but still have enough for emergencies, and I wouldn’t mind earning a bit more because raising a kid is expensive, but I don’t really need more than I’ve got. What do people do with millions of dollars?”
“Buy things they don’t need and won’t ever use, then leave the rest sittin’ in the bank gatherin’ interest I guess.” Dee shook his head. “They’ve forgotten how to appreciate the simple things in life, like sunsets, clouds, and rainbows, jumpin’ in piles of fallen leaves just to hear ‘em crunch…”
“Frost patterns on the windows on winter mornings, or the way the sunlight just before a storm makes the edges of trees shine like gold against the dark clouds.”
“Buildin’ snowmen and sandcastles… I wonder I anyone’s ever tried buildin’ a snowcastle… Gotta try that sometime, soon as we get some decent snow.”
Ryo laughed. “You can borrow Bikky’s bucket and spade; he never uses them anymore.”
“Thanks, babe.” Dee flashed his lover a grin before turning his attention once more to the people hurrying past on their way to work. He sipped his coffee and relaxed. “Yep, people would be a whole lot happier if they remembered to enjoy the simple things.”
