Ryo leaned back against the parapet and closed his eyes for a moment, breathing slowly and deeply. The smell of cordite tickled his nose and he breathed out sharply, snorting it away.
His rifle was still in his hand and opening his eyes he automatically began the process of breaking it down, slotting the components into their case. He’d clean it thoroughly back at the precinct.
This had been a bad one; an armed gang had taken multiple hostages, threatening to shoot one every ten minutes until their demands were met. Why did criminals still think those kinds of threats would work? They’d demanded transport, a plane waiting at the airport, and expected to get it. All they’d gotten was dead. If they’d surrendered they would’ve been facing jail, but they’d still have had the chance of a life after serving their time.
It was over now though; the three members of the gang were dead, the hostages were being checked over by paramedics and treated for shock, and the police snipers…
“Great shooting, Ryo.”
He looked up at JJ on the neighbouring rooftop; spoke into his own headset.
“You too, JJ.”
Their job was over; cleanup wasn’t their responsibility.
