“What should we do?” one of the police constables asked Kathy Swanson. When in doubt, pass the buck to someone with more seniority; it was an unwritten rule, but nevertheless a good one, and as a Detective Inspector she outranked him considerably.


Kathy sighed. One of the downsides of being among Cardiff’s senior police officers was having all the weird stuff palmed off on her.


“Tell me again what the problem is.” She was starting to get a headache.


The PC repeated what he’d already told her. If anything it made her headache worse.


“Alright, first cordon off the area and divert traffic around the problem. I’ll send some backup to help you with that. Keep members of the public well back, preferably far enough that they can’t take photographs. I’d better call Torchwood.”


“Special ops? What can they do that we can’t?”


“You’d be surprised. They’re the experts when it comes to weird.”


A giant snail holding up traffic on Newport Road definitely counted as weird.


“Approximately how big did you say it was?”


“Let me put it this way; it’s blocking both lanes.”


“That’s big.” Kathy reached for her phone; she hoped Torchwood had a big enough truck.
