Snatching five more minutes in bed on a cold, grey winter’s morning had led to Ryo falling asleep again and scrambling out of bed forty-five minutes later, throwing his clothes on, and dashing out of the apartment without even taking the time for a cup of coffee. Before now he’d never been late for work, except for that one occasion he’d gotten stuck in traffic because of a bad accident, but he’d phoned the Chief that time to explain his tardiness. He had no such excuse today.
Bursting into the precinct, he took the stairs three at a time and skidded into the squad room ten minutes late, collapsing into his chair, flushed and panting, feeling like he’d run a marathon.
Dee raised an eyebrow. “Mornin’. Not like you to be late.”
“I overslept.” Ryo turned his computer on and got to work, but Dee noticed he was fidgeting uncomfortably and finally he leapt to his feet, heading for the locker room at speed.
Dee followed. “You okay, bud?”
“Fine.” Ryo started to strip. “I got dressed in such a hurry I think I put my shorts on back to front.”
Dee almost fell over he was laughing so hard.
