Jack wasn’t happy. His beloved vintage rotary phone had fallen off his desk and broken during a very energetic session with Ianto; its case was split in two, the dial hanging loose.
That phone had sat on what was now his desk for a good fifty years; it wasn’t just a piece of office equipment it was more like an old friend, but now it looked like it had reached the end of the line. Obviously he still needed an office phone, so he’d decided to get the same kind, but when he’d started looking around for a replacement all he’d found were modern push-button cordless phones. Where was the charm or style in one of those?
Sure, it might be nice to be able to wander around his office while on the phone without having to carry the whole thing around with him, risking tripping on the cable, but poking at buttons just didn’t have the tactile pleasure of dialling the old-fashioned way.
Ianto found him in his office, gloomily looking at phones online. “Can’t find what you want?”
“Nobody sells old-style phones anymore.”
“Have you tried ebay?”
“Not yet.” Opening a window, Jack found himself spoiled for choice.
