“Honestly, Dee, there’s no need to fuss so much. I’m fine.”
“Says the guy who just got flattened takin’ down some dude practically twice his size!”
“Now you’re exaggerating.” Ryo looked at his partner with fond exasperation. “He was only a few inches taller than me--”
“And must’ve weighed close to three hundred pounds! When he landed on top of ya I thought that was it, end of story.”
“Not one of my better moves, I’ll admit.” Ryo smiled ruefully. “I wasn’t expecting him to go down so fast, thought there’d be time to get clear; guess he must’ve had a weak knee.”
When Ryo had kicked one leg out from under the man mountain the other had buckled; it had been like watching a building collapse. As he’d toppled sideways Ryo hadn’t been able to take evasive action and had wound up flat on his back with their suspect sprawled on top of him.
“Couldn’t believe it when you just shoved him off like he was nothin’!”
Ryo shrugged. “I had good leverage, and the sloping ground helped.”
“So did the guy’s shape. Like rollin’ a barrel.”
“What? Tell me you don’t see the resemblance!”
“Whatever. Got the cuffs on him easier than I expected though.” Ryo had snapped them on while the downed man was still gasping like a fish out of water, having had all the breath knocked out of him.
“Like somethin’ outta the rodeo, downed and trussed up in seconds. Gotta say I was impressed.” Dee glanced sidelong at his partner. “You sure you’re okay? Maybe we should swing by the ER, get ya checked out.”
“I’m fine, just a few bruises. I’ve had worse during karate training. Would you quit worrying?”
“Never. In fact I plan on fussln’ over ya all night.”
