“Do something, Owen! I can’t lose him!” Jack was understandably frantic, looking at Ianto, pale and still on the autopsy table.
“Clear!” Owen yelled, and Jack pulled back as the medic slapped the paddles against Ianto’s chest.
“Argh!” Ianto yelled, jolting upright as his eyes snapped open. “What the hell are you doing, trying to kill me?”
Owen’s jaw dropped. “But… but…” he spluttered, looking at his monitors which indicated that Ianto had neither pulse not heartbeat. “You’re dead!”
“I don’t feel dead, no thanks to your so-called medical expertise. I just got knocked out when that… whatever it was threw me against the wall.”
“Gnissue,” Jack said.
“Bless you.”
“No, that’s what it was called; a Gnissue.”
“Stupid name for something built like a tank.”
Owen was still spluttering. “You don’t have a heartbeat!”
“Of course I do!” Ianto snapped. “You just forgot to recalibrate your doohickey there after treating that Oostrokon last week.”
“Fuck!” Owen fumbled with the machine; he’d been forced to re-set the monitors due to Oostrokonian heartbeats being so much faster and stronger than a human’s the telltales had been nothing but a blur.
A steady beep filled the room.
“See?” Ianto said. “I’m alive.”
