Even Dee had to admit Rome was a beautiful city; a bit far to travel for a week’s vacation, but hey, it wasn’t like they were paying. The trip had been an anniversary gift from Bikky and Carol, and they’d chosen somewhere Bikky knew Ryo had long wanted to visit, so Dee had no complaints. As long as his husband was happy then he was happy too.
There was just one minor downside; because of his jet-black hair and olive tinged skin, other tourists kept mistaking Dee for a local. Ryo thought it was hilarious, but Dee was less amused, gritting his teeth as an overweight, middle-aged woman came trotting up, clutching an Italian phrasebook. In a distinct Southern accent, she started trying to fumble her way through a few phrases in Italian that Dee was pretty sure she was mangling so badly he doubted the locals would have understood her either.
“Lady, I don’t speak Italian any better than you do; I’m from the Bronx.”
She blinked at him, confounded by his New York accent. “Oh, really? Well then, how do I get to the Trevi Fountain?”
“No clue. D’you know the way to the Colosseum?”
“Of course not, I’m American!”
Dee rolled his eyes. “Yeah, well so am I.”
“I got directions to the Colosseum,” Ryo said, appearing at Dee’s elbow.
“Great! Let’s go!”
“Do you speak Italian?” the woman butted in rudely, directing her question at Ryo.
“Then how’d you get directions?”
Ryo shrugged. “Lots of Italians are fluent in English; I just asked a policeman.” Ryo pointed to a man in uniform standing on the corner of the street, and the woman scurried in that direction without a word of thanks.
“Y’know,” Dee said, frowning after her, “I’m really startin’ to hate American tourists.”
