Dee stood by the overgrown grave, empty-handed, feeling oddly guilty. He visited Jess’s grave every year without fail on the anniversary of his death, but when was the last time he’d been here, checking in on Arnon?
They’d both been fifteen when Arnon’s life had been cruelly cut short, and scarcely two weeks later Dee had lost Jess, the closest thing he’d had to a father. Somehow that loss had overshadowed the previous one, or maybe it had just been that Arnon had a mother and other friends to mourn him while Jess only had Dee. Whatever the reason, at some point Dee had stopped visiting the grave of his long lost childhood friend. He should have visited more often.
Had it really been twenty years? It hardly seemed possible. What might Arnon have become if he’d lived? It was impossible to know, and it hardly mattered now anyway, since he’d never had the chance to make his mark on the world. No one should have to die so young.
“Hey. Been a while, hasn’t it?” Closing his eyes, Dee could picture Arnon the way he’d looked back then. It brought a lump to his throat. “I miss you, bud.”
