As serious crimes detectives, and having investigated more than a few homicides and violent attacks, Dee and Ryo weren’t bothered by the sight of blood, except when it came to the blood of those they cared about; then all bets were off.
Dee scrambled to his feet, one hand clutching at his nose, blood dripping between his fingers, and Ryo’s eyes widened in horror.
“Dabbit! I tink ‘e broge by dose!” The suspect had jerked his head backwards as Dee was cuffing him.
Seizing his chance, Dee’s assailant took off, or tried to, but Ryo stuck out his foot and brought him crashing face first to the ground, where he lay groaning, winded and in pain. As he gasped for breath, bright red droplets splattered the sidewalk and Ryo was torn between vindictive satisfaction and annoyance. Now he had two bloody noses to deal with.
Shoving a wad of tissues at Dee from the box in their car, Ryo flipped the suspect over, cuffed his hands in front of him, and threw him in the backseat, tossing some tissues after him.
“You get blood on the upholstery and you’ll really be in trouble.”
He turned back to Dee, peeling his partner’s hands away from his face and examining Dee’s nose, which was already swelling, not to mention visibly out of alignment.
“’Ow’s id loog?” Dee asked indistinctly.
“Like we’d better swing by the ER before we head back to the precinct.” Ryo smiled sympathetically.
“Dis id nod by day.”
