Sometimes, waking in the middle of the night to a darkened room, it’s impossible to tell what’s real and what’s a dream, nothing more than images produced by his brain in an effort to work through events that even now he hasn’t fully come to terms with.
He jolts from a deep sleep, skin clammy, heart pounding, breath rasping in his throat, wondering where he is, whether he’s still trapped beneath the wreckage of an exploding building and everything he remembers as having happened since is nothing more than wishful thinking, his imagination providing him with a life in place of the one he’s about to lose.
Then, as often as not, he’ll feel the bed shift beside him, a sleep-heavy arm draping over his chest as a warm, familiar voice murmurs soothing words.
“S’okay, Dee, jus’ a bad dream. Go back t’ sleep.”
Just like that, he can hear the ticking of the clock, the muted sound of distant traffic, the steady breathing beside him, and his frantic heartbeat slows. The panic fades, and he can breathe again, drawing cool air into his lungs, devoid of choking dust.
He didn’t die that day; he’s alive, and this is real.
