Ryo stood there dripping, soaked to the skin and feeling colder with every passing moment. He hadn’t intended in taking a swim with his clothes on, especially not in such miserable weather, but he hadn’t realised there was a deep, flooded pit right ahead of him until he’d been floundering in the muddy water trying to get out again.

The unexpected dip had been bad enough, and so had Dee’s reaction to seeing him like this, first staring at him in incredulous disbelief and then bursting out laughing, but now he was faced with a bigger problem.

“I can’t get in the car like this, Dee! Look at the state I’m in, I’ll soak the upholstery!” Water was still running from his clothes and now it was starting to rain again.

“How else are ya gonna get back to the precinct?” Dee asked. “You’ll catch your death walkin’.”

“I’ll get the bus or something.”

Dee snickered, imagining his partner standing there dripping on the other passengers. “Dumbass. Just get in the car. If the guys in the motor pool complain about the mess, I’ll bring ‘em out here and see how they like takin’ a swim.”

Reluctantly, Ryo got in.
