Now Nosy had learned enough about the Hub and the things in it to be trusted to behave responsibly, it was free to wander wherever it liked, including the archives, provided it was with either Jack or Ianto. The Fluff had been fitted with a tracking chip, just in case it got lost while exploring the lower levels, but had already proved to have a very good sense of direction, so that seemed unlikely.
Today, Nosy was accompanying Ianto down to the lower archives, a section mostly used to store things that were just waiting for the Rift energy that soaked them on arrival to dissipate before being sent to charity shops or auctions for re-sale. It was pointless keeping stuff that was neither alien nor dangerous when the space could be put to better use.
Halfway down the stairs, Nosy suddenly stopped dead, all its fur standing on end. Ianto knew that feeling; he’d experienced it often enough down here.
“You sense him too, huh?” he said. “I call him the man who isn’t there. Sometimes he’s visible, sometimes just a presence. You’ll get used to him.”
Nosy hummed mournfully.
“Yes, I know. He makes me feel sad too.”
