To Ianto’s eyes, the Torchwood Three archives resembled a cross between a jumble sale, a junk shop, an eccentric relative’s attic, and a rubbish tip. Standing there gazing along a narrow, cluttered aisle between two equally cluttered rows of shelves, he began to wonder whether he’d been temporarily out of his mind when he’d suggested he might take on the task of sorting the contents of the maze of rooms and passageways. Maybe if he had a dozen or so trained assistants it might be doable, but he didn’t; there was just him.
Shaking his head, he wandered between the shelves, studying their contents; weird objects, contraptions, devices, and gadgets, the purpose of which he couldn’t begin to imagine. Some were piled in cardboard, wooden, or plastic boxes, others just sat on the shelves. He could see labels attached to about a third of them, while other labels lay scattered on the floor, where they’d fallen after coming adrift from the things they were supposed to identify, only to be trampled into the dust.
Looked like that should be his first step: gather the fallen labels and try to match them to the unlabelled gadgets. Maybe he’d find something useful.
