There are evenings when, although they know they have to be back at the precinct bright and early the next morning, Ryo and Dee clock off and make their way to the small marina on the river where their boat is moored.
Sometimes they’ll take her out for a few hours, sailing up the river or a few miles down the coast before turning back, but more often they’ll simply sit on the deck if the weather’s good enough, sipping beer and letting the water gently rock them. It’s soothing, relaxing, and despite the city being right there on their doorstep, they can imagine that they’re miles away from the stresses and pressures of work.
They don’t always go back to their apartment for the night either; their cabin aboard the boat is spacious and comfortable, and they keep the galley well stocked with the essentials, such as coffee and breakfast foods. It might mean they have to get up an hour earlier than they would otherwise in order to get to work on time, but it’s a small price to pay for spending a night on the water, and they return to work with clearer heads and lighter hearts.
