Ryo studied himself in the bathroom mirror as he shaved, trying to see if he looked any different after the previous night. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but to his eyes he looked just the same as ever.
Only he knew he wasn’t. Last night in Dee’s bed he’d let go of something he’d been clinging to his whole adult life, finally giving in to the truth about himself, and even though he looked the same he felt different.
For so long he’d been afraid to admit he was more attracted to men than he was to women, afraid of how Dee made him feel, but now that fear was gone, and it was freeing.
He knew it wouldn’t all be smooth sailing. Admitting he was gay would open him up to all kinds of discrimination and prejudice; that was partly why he’d fought so long and hard against accepting the truth. But why should he have to hide part of who he was just because of other people’s intolerance? That didn’t mean he was immediately going to tell everyone he was gay, it was no one else’s business, but neither should he be ashamed of loving who he loved. And he did love Dee, he was sure of that now.
He wasn’t quite ready to tell Dee that just yet, they had an important witness to protect and both of them should be focusing on that at the moment; this wasn’t a good time for distractions. That was okay, there was no real rush; it could wait a week or two, just until the protection detail ended.
Ryo smiled at his reflection; he’d also have to thank Diana for giving him a nudge in the right direction, but that would wait too. Work had to take priority.
