Up on the roof of their building the barbecue was blazing, sending up tempting aromas from the meat cooking on it; sausages, burgers, tender chicken breasts being chargrilled to perfection… The buns were ready and waiting, mustard, and relish on hand for anyone who wanted them; there were pickles, salad, and plenty of beer on ice. All they were missing were the guests.
Flipping burgers one-handed, Dee dialled Ted’s number, waiting impatiently for his friend to answer.
“Where the hell are ya? At this rate food’s gonna be charred to a crisp by the time ya get here!”
“Maybe ya should’a waited until we arrived before ya started cookin’,” Ted replied, chuckling amiably. “We’re maybe five minutes away. Y’know what the ladies are like; Drake’s gettin’ as bad as JJ, wantin’ to look all pretty!”
“You take that back!” Drake’s voice came clearly over the phone. “We were late getting off shift, we barely had time to get home, shower, and change. Even then, we wouldn’t be running so late if you hadn’t taken a wrong turn.”
Dee cut in before the argument could escalate. “Just so ya know, if you losers aren’t here by the time the meat’s ready, Ryo and I are startin’ without ya.”
Coming onto the roof with a stack of plates, Ryo grinned at his partner, leaning in so he’d be heard over the phone. “Unless you like your burgers well done, you guys might want to hurry it up.” He brushed a quick kiss across Dee’s cheek and went to set the plates on the table.
“Come straight on up when ya get here,” Dee said, flipping burgers and sausages again. “Access door’s open. See ya in a few.” He hung up, smiling. First barbecue of the year; it was gonna be awesome!
