Bikky studied the enticing display, carefully weighing his options. His weekly allowance was almost gone, spent on similar treats; candy, comic books, ice cream, and the chocolate milkshakes he and Carol indulged in yesterday.
He counted the change in his pocket again; there was maybe just enough for a candy bar and a soda, if he was careful. Choosing was always difficult, but never more so than at the end of the week, when he was down to the last handful of carefully hoarded coins.
Tomorrow he’d get the coming week’s allowance, but right now this was all he had. Maybe if he tried the store just down the street… Sometimes they had special offers; that would stretch his money a little bit further.
He was almost to the store when he passed the homeless person, a kid barely older than himself. One step, two, three… He turned back, scooping all his coins from his pocket and dropping them in the paper cup the other kid was using as a collection pot.
“Sorry it’s not more; that’s all I’ve got right now.” He ran off before the kid could say anything, thinking, ‘At least now I don’t have to choose.’
