What could be better on a warm early summer afternoon than a game of softball in the park? Dee and his team from Mother’s orphanage were up against Ryo and the rest of the kids. Naturally Ryo had Bikky on his team, so Dee had conscripted Carol to play for him. She was better at softball than the House Ape anyway since Bikky preferred basketball. So did Dee really, but softball worked better as a team sport for the kids. It got them out from under Mother’s feet for a few hours too, giving her some peace and quiet.
Right now, Dee’s team was pitching and Ryo’s team were batting. Since Bikky was in to bat, Dee felt no need to hold back as he’d been doing with the younger, smaller kids. He wound all the way up and let fly as hard and fast as he could. Let’s see if he could catch the brat out.
Bikky missed the first pitch and scowled at Dee. “What was that? This is supposed to be a friendly game!”
“Too much for ya?” Dee taunted, thoroughly enjoying himself. “Want me to go easy on ya?”
“No way! Bring it on. I can handle anything you throw at me.”
Grinning, Dee got ready for the next pitch; two more like the last one and Bikky would be out.
It might well have been the best fastball Dee had ever thrown, and yet as Bikky swung, the bat connected with a resounding thwack. Dee’s jaw dropped as the ball soared past the outfield and kept going. Bikky had already dropped the bat and taken off; home run and then some.
Everyone on Ryo’s team was cheering while Dee’s center fielder scrambled to retrieve the ball. Dee scowled. Dammit! Looked like his team just lost!
