Paradise. For Dee that word had always evoked images of a sun-drenched tropical island. Deserted white sand beaches stretching as far as the eye could see, bordering an azure ocean, with palm trees swaying gently in a warm tropical breeze; the kind of place that only seemed to exist on the glossy covers of holiday brochures.
He’d often wished he could afford that kind of vacation, as far from New York with its noise and pollution as he could get. He imagined himself strolling along a beach in the moonlight with some as yet unknown gorgeous chick or seriously hot dude. Maybe they’d get it on beneath the palms, sweet tropical lovin’…
Unfortunately he’d never been good at saving money; he spent his wages practically the moment he got them. Rent, bills, food, smokes… Anything left over after he’d paid for life’s essentials went on supplies for the orphanage.
But now he was starting to wonder; maybe paradise was less a place and more a state of mind.
Coney Island was as far from a tropical island as he could imagine, but as he strolled hand-in-hand with Ryo along the crowded boardwalk, he was pretty sure he was in paradise.
