A/N: Double drabble.
Working for Torchwood was unlike anything else; nothing could prepare a person in advance for the reality of dealing with aliens and alien technology. Everything Torchwood agents learned came through experience, either their own or what they heard from their colleagues, and it could be disorienting to say the least.
“I’m not sure I’m cut out for this job,” Olivia, one of the new recruits, confided when Tosh asked her if she was okay. She’d only been working there for a couple of weeks and it had been a particularly tough day, battling a malevolent blob that had absorbed three people and a dog before the team could stop it, leaving behind nothing but bare bones.
“You did well,” Tosh said, squeezing Olivia’s hands. “You followed Jack’s orders, held your ground, and fired when you were told to.”
“I froze. I was so scared!”
“You weren’t the only one; we were all scared, even Jack. If the plan had failed… but it didn’t, and we’re all fine.”
“Except the people it killed.”
Tosh nodded. “Except for them. We can’t always save everybody.”
“How do you do it? How do you stay so strong and so calm?”
Tosh smiled wryly. “Experience.”
