The motel was shabby and rundown, but it was a case of any port in a storm. The weather had gotten bad fast, rain coming down in sheets until Dee could barely see the road ahead. He’d been about ready to pull onto the shoulder and wait out the storm, except that would’ve meant putting them at risk of being rammed by some other half-blinded driver. Spotting the vacancy sign flashing its welcome through a brief letup in the downpour had seemed like a gift from God and he’d felt a surge of relief as he’d turned off the freeway at the next exit.
Pulling in as close to the office as possible, Dee darted from the car and inside, Ryo right behind him. The bored woman behind the desk perked up at the sight of them, flirting with them both, but when neither man showed any interest she gave up and had them sign the register before handing over the key to a room with twin beds.
Dee wasn’t in any mood to argue, tired from the drive and just wanting a shower and bed. Besides, just because there were two beds didn’t mean they had to use both.
“Good thing we stopped to eat at that diner,” Ryo commented as he closed the door behind him, dropping his bag on the nearest bed.
“Good thing we picked up some snacks while we were there too; least we won’t go hungry.” The motel didn’t have so much as a soda machine. “Not exactly five-star accommodation, is it?”
“Who cares? At least it’s dry and we get to sleep in a bed.” Ryo was already shedding his wet things; the rain was so heavy they’d gotten soaked just in the few moments it had taken to run from their car to their room.
“You’re right, could be worse. Join me in the shower?”
“Depends. Is the water hot? ‘Cause if it’s not I’ll pass. I’m already cold and wet; I don’t need more of the same.”
“Bed then; I’ll warm you up.”
Ryo smiled. “That’s an offer I can’t refuse.”
