“Being a cop’s no cakewalk,” Dee told the academy’s newest recruits. “If you’re lookin’ for an easy ride, you’re in the wrong place. You make it through trainin’ and go out on the streets, you’ll be workin’ long hours in all kinds of weather for wages that are a joke. It’s hard and it’s dangerous, you’ll witness some of the worst things people can do to each other, and they’ll stick with ya after you clock off at the end of your shift.”
Ryo took over the lecture.
“You’ll be yelled at, cursed at, spat at, and worse, and you’ll have to take it. Sometimes the people you go to arrest will attack you, and they might be better armed. Sometimes the victims will attack you; not everyone appreciates police assistance. If you don’t think you can handle the kinds of stress you’ll be subjected to, then leave now.”
“But if you’re still determined to wear the badge,” Dee concluded. “If you genuinely want to help people and you’re not just lookin’ for excitement, you couldn’t choose a more rewardin’ career than makin’ the streets of this city a safer place for the law-abidin’ people who live here. We’re not gonna go easy on ya, we’ll push ya harder than you’ve ever been pushed before and you’ll hate us for it, but you’ll learn everything you’ll need to know to deal with whatever’s thrown at ya. By the time we’re done you’ll be the best damned rookie cops you can be.”
He and Ryo studied their rag-tag little group of recruits, pleased to see each and every one meet their gaze unflinchingly; none of them backed down. They might be the dregs of the current intake but they were undaunted, determined to fulfil their dreams.
They might just make it.
