Through the plastic window of the tent the early morning mist made everything hazy and indistinct. In an hour or so it would burn off in the heat of the rising sun but right now it gave the world a dreamlike, insubstantial quality and Ryo had a sudden irresistible urge to be out in it. This was what camping was all about, experiencing a world largely unsullied by people.
Quietly and carefully he slid out of the double sleeping bag he shared with Dee, pulled some clothes on and unzipped the tent flaps just enough for him to get through, pulling the zipper down behind him. Dee insisted on having the tent closed up tight at all times to keep snakes out, not that there would be any about this early; it wasn’t warm enough yet for them to emerge from their dens.
The mist was chilly and damp, billowing softly around him as he made his way down to the edge of the lake, treading with care, trying to make as little sound as he could. What he saw as he came to the edge of the trees made his caution worthwhile; a heron was fishing from some rocks jutting out into the water, a sort of natural jetty, and maybe fifty feet further along the bank several deer were drinking, raising their heads frequently to check for danger.
Breathless and unmoving, Ryo watched them, hoping that Dee would go on sleeping a while longer. If he woke to find Ryo gone he’d worry, probably come blundering out here looking for him, and then the deer would be gone. Dee was stealthy enough on their home ground, but not as good at keeping quiet in the wilderness.
For now, Ryo drank in the scene, enjoying the silence and solitude.
