Some days the job just ran them ragged, the whole shift passing in a blur. Today had been non-stop; six hours in and they’d visited three separate crime scenes, interviewed over a dozen witnesses, discussed the preliminary results of two autopsies with the coroner, and read so many forensics reports the words were starting to blur in front of Dee’s aching eyes. Maybe it was time he looked into getting reading glasses.

Lunch had been a hotdog from a street vendor, grabbed on the way back to their car after they’d left the second crime scene. At least there’d been no fatalities at that one, although they’d had to go to the hospital to get the victim’s statement; she’d been roughed up pretty badly. The spate of home invasions didn’t look like it would be coming to an end any time soon, not unless he and Ryo got a solid lead and managed to track down the gang of thugs responsible. If they could only catch the bastards in the act…

“Coffee?” A mug was set down at Dee’s elbow and he looked up at his partner with a grateful smile.

“Thanks, bud.”

“Figured you probably needed it. I know I do.” Ryo flopped into his chair with a groan. “Feels like my feet might fall off. I’ve done fifteen-mile hikes that haven’t been this exhausting.”

“I know what ya mean. Poundin’ the sidewalks is hard on the feet.”

“Two more hours and we can clock off, go home and put our feet up.” Ryo rummaged in his desk drawer, producing a box of cookies from the depths and offering it to Dee before helping himself; they both needed the energy boost.

“Maybe soak in a hot bath first.”

“That would be heaven.”

“End of shift can’t come soon enough.”

The End
