Title: Nutty Idea
Author:
badly_knitted
Characters: Ianto, Jack.
Rating: G
Written For: Challenge 641: Fortune at
tw100.
Spoilers: Nada.
Summary: Ianto is puzzled by something he’s found in the archives.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.
A/N: Double drabble.
“So what is it?” Ianto asked, studying the small, knobbly silvery grey object. It looked a bit like a golf ball, only it was about half the size and had small lumps all over it instead of dents.
“It’s a Boolia nut.” Jack smiled happily. “They’re a symbol of good fortune; the natives of the planet where the Boolia trees grow consider them lucky charms. Sometimes they’re made into jewellery and worn.”
“If they’re nuts then why don’t the people just eat them?”
“The shells are difficult to crack, and the kernel tastes disgusting,” Jack explained. “The fruits are edible and delicious, but the nuts, basically the seed from inside the fruit, aren’t worth the effort. Besides, very few of the fruits contain a nut, so finding one is a big deal. That’s where the whole good fortune idea comes from; anyone lucky enough to find one will usually throw a big party to celebrate their success, at which time the nut is treated as an honoured guest and displayed on the family shrine. Really lucky families have more than one.”
“Wouldn’t people try to steal them if they’re so valuable?”
“Never. That would condemn them to eternal bad luck.”

Thank you!
I used to love nuts myself but I seem to be developing an intolerance to them =(
I used to buy bags of nuts as snacks, a healthy option, but now... *sigh* There are so many things I can't eat it's hard finding things I CAN eat.
