Dee wasn’t big on culture, not the way Ryo was. He’d rather go to a ball game, or slob in front of the TV watching sports, than spend his day off traipsing around museums, art galleries, and stuff. Not that he had anything against such places, in theory; he was sure a lot of people must enjoy them, otherwise there’d be no point in them existing, they just weren’t really his thing.
Still, Ryo had wanted to go, and it was only fair they should do some things his lover enjoyed. Give and take was important in a relationship. If looking at a lot of old stuff made Ryo happy then that was what they’d do. Ryo let himself be dragged to sporting events without complaining so the least Dee could do was smile and try to look interested.
It did make him wonder why Ryo had chosen him instead of Commissioner Rose though. Rose was into all this stuff, not just the museums and galleries but the theatre, opera, ballet… Ryo could’ve had all that, and the money to enjoy it, if he’d let Rose sweep him off his feet. Instead, he’d punched Berkie in the mouth, making it perfectly clear he wasn’t interested in whatever their superior was offering. Instead, he’d settled for a cultureless schmuck who wouldn’t know a Van Gogh from a hole in the ground.
“It’s almost a thousand years old,” Ryo said reverently, gesturing to some old broken clay pot in one pf the display cases. “Can you imagine? I wonder who it belonged to. D’you think they made it themselves?”
Dee stared at the ugly old lump. Once, long ago, someone had used that pot, for cooking maybe, or for water. Their lives would have been very different from his, and yet if they and others like them hadn’t existed then he and Ryo wouldn’t be here today. It was something to think about.
“D’you think sometime far in the future people are gonna visit museums to marvel over all the ‘primitive’ things we use?”
Ryo grinned. “I wouldn’t be at all surprised.”
