When he walked into Dee’s apartment, Ryo found his lover apparently practicing his tapdancing in the kitchen. He wasn’t particularly good; mostly he was just stamping his feet at random.
Ryo smiled, amused. Dee usually had a much better sense of rhythm than he was displaying at present. “Having fun?”
Dee looked up, scowling “Fun? Hardly!”
“So what’s with the tapdancing?”
“Ants!” Dee stamped his feet a few more times, scanning the floor tiles. “I’m four floors up! Don’t know where they came from, but I’ve got ‘em!”
“You’re sure they’re ants?”
“I’m not stupid, I know what an ant, or several thousand of the little fuckers, look like!”
Reaching the kitchen, Ryo saw several dozen small black bugs scurrying around.
“Yeah, you definitely have an ant problem. There must be a colony somewhere. Did you bring anything new into the apartment recently?”
“Only the fern.” Dee indicated a fern in a tub which he’d set in a corner. “Got it at the supermarket, though it might be nice to have a bit of greenery. I mean, you’ve got plants everywhere, and ferns are supposed to do well in shade.”
Checking the tub, Ryo nodded as his suspicions were confirmed. “Looks like you had the bad luck to get one with an ant nest in it.”
“Crap! That’s the kind of free gift nobody needs. Guess I’d better get rid of it.”
“Maybe not. If you re-pot the fern making sure you don’t leave any eggs around the roots, and then put down ant killer to finish off any ants you haven’t managed to stomp to death, that might solve the problem without having to sacrifice your plant.”
“You think so? ‘Cause I kinda like the fern.”
“It’s worth a try.”
“Right; this means war! Those ants are goin’ down!”
