“Aren’t you glad I woke you up early?”

Dee glanced at Ryo, smiling. The sun was high in a baby blue sky, there was a light breeze ruffling the blossom on the trees, and spring flowers blooming everywhere. Two hours ago he’d been fast asleep in bed, fully intending to stay there until at least ten-thirty, maybe even later, but instead here he was, strolling through Central Park, hand-in-hand with his lover, a bag with a blanket in it over one shoulder and a cooler full of beer and soft drinks in the other. Ryo was carrying a second cooler, laden with a picnic feast.

“Gotta admit this is a better way of spendin’ our day off than dealin’ with chores.”

“You had chores to do? We should go back and do them!” Ryo playfully pretended to turn around and head back the way they’d come.

“Doofus,” Dee accused, tugging lightly on Ryo’s hand. “Chores can wait for another time; days like this are made for picnics.”

“And you were going to sleep half the day away,” Ryo teased.

“Still might, just not in my bed.” Breathing deeply of the blossom-scented air, Dee silently thanked his lover for reminding him to start taking his antihistamines last month, otherwise he’d have been thoroughly miserable and sneezing his head off by now.

“I wish it could always be spring.” Ryo tipped his head back to look up at a small bird, singing sweetly overhead.

“No ya don’t. I know you; if it was always spring you’d soon start wishin’ for hot summer days at the beach, the colors of fall, frosty winter nights where the stars are so bright they look like diamonds set in black velvet.”

Ryo laughed softly. “You’re right, I would, but for the moment I’m glad it’s spring.”
