From their first meeting, Dee and Ryo had learned to rely on each other, first as work partners, watching each other’s backs in dangerous situations, and then as friends. If one needed help with something, anything, the other would willingly lend a hand, because that was what friends did. Dee fixed leaking taps, un-jammed locks, and wrestled with cranky heating while Ryo repaired torn clothing, revived dying houseplants, gave cooking lessons, and dealt with computer and phone issues.

They listened to, and commiserated with, each other’s complaints, did their best to cheer each other up when work or life got them down, provided a sounding board for ideas, ran errands in emergencies, and provided transportation when required.

Becoming a couple only increased their reliance on each other, but that was hardly unexpected. They were in love and would do anything they could to make each other happy, whether that meant cooking favourite foods after a bad day or offering backrubs to soothe sore muscles. They took care of their partner’s needs, usually without being asked.

“You’re too good to me,” Dee said one night as Ryo helped him get ready for bed.

“That’s an odd thing to complain about, isn’t it?”

“Wasn’t complainin’, just statin’ a fact.” Dee wobbled and Ryo steadied him.

“I’m just doing the same things you do for me when I’m injured. It’s hardly your fault your leg’s broken.”

“I know, it was that asshole who knocked me down the stairs, but still… Makes me wonder how people cope when they don’t have someone they can rely on to help with stuff like this.” Dee flopped onto the bed while Ryo wrestled his partner’s plaster cast into the leg of his sweatpants, followed by his good leg. “Without you givin’ me a hand it’d probably take me half the night to get to bed. By the time I made it, I’d probably haveta get up again.”

It didn’t help that Dee’s left wrist had also been fractured in the fall, making what would normally be simple tasks ten times more complicated. Doing things one-handed was hard enough at the best of times, but for a left-handed guy, having to use his right hand instead was incredibly awkward. Even fastening buttons had him fumbling so much that Ryo had to take over, and yet his lover did everything without complaint, brushing Dee’s good hand aside and lightly kissing his lips before sorting him out.

“Knowing you, you’d just stay in bed all day if I wasn’t here.”

“Would save time and effort. So, you still gonna be takin’ care of me when I’m old and all my hair’s fallen out?”

Ryo snorted softly. “No way, you’ll be the one taking care of me. I’m older than you, remember?”

“Right, by a whole ten months!” Dee grinned. “Guess that means we’ll be takin’ care of each other.”

“We already do; I don’t see why that should ever change.”

It was comforting having someone they could always rely on.
