Until now, Drake had always considered love as a fleeting thing, rare and hard to find, and it never lasted. The first flush of passion that came as you started dating someone you were attracted to, got to know them, couldn’t get enough of each other… it inevitably began to fizzle out after a few weeks and you started focusing on all the little things that had seemed cute to begin with but were actually really annoying.

Then there were the criticisms, the arguments, the silences, and the nights spent sleeping on the sofa. Next thing you knew you were single again, and Drake hated being single.

How many girls had he dated since the first one? He tried to count them; there’d been Ruby, Claire, Mandy, Gloria, Betty-Ann, Cheryl, Felicity, Lucy, Liz Sherwood, Francine, Audrey, Liz Black, Alison, Sharon, Sue-Ann, Linda, Stephanie, Barbara… and that was just since he’d graduated from the police academy. Audrey had lasted three weeks before she dumped him and went back to her ex, Cheryl had lasted almost six months, and the rest had been somewhere in between.

Back in high school he’d played the field because he was too young to settle down and anyway, all his friends were doing the same, and yet even then he’d expected to be married by his mid-twenties. But last year, when he’d reached the grand old age of thirty-two, still single and alone, he’d been about ready to give up on love and accept he was destined to always be alone. True love was an elusive, fragile thing that faded away like mist on a summer’s day. He wasn’t like other guys, he didn’t have what it took to make someone love him enough to accept everything about him, to love him in spite of his flaws, but now…

He and JJ were less than a month shy of their first anniversary, and even though they had their share of fights, so far they’d always managed to get past them, kiss, and make up, proving that love wasn’t so elusive once you found the right person.

The End
