“Aliens,” Ianto repeated.
Recruiting people to Torchwood was a more difficult task than you might think. For one thing, the initial interview process had to be carried out without telling applicants anything about what the job really entailed. They used words like ‘national security’ and ‘special ops’ and ‘classified’ but avoided any mention of the Rift or extra-terrestrials until they’d weeded out the unsuitable candidates.
Eventually of course they had to come clean, and that was when even the most impressive of the potential recruits might balk.
“Yes. Aliens are real and there are quite a few in Cardiff.”
“That’s impossible! Scientists and astronomers all agree that earth’s the only planet in the universe where life has evolved!”
“Humans are considered primitive by galactic standards,” Ianto explained. “In order for us to evolve at our own pace, earth probes are intercepted and supplied with false data. Advanced technology ensures that our telescopes only see what other races want them to see. We’re not ready yet for formal contact with the wider universe, so our world is off-limits. Unfortunately, some races break the rules, which is why Torchwood exists.
“Nah, you’ve got to be pulling my leg!”
