Lying on their backs, Jack and Ianto gazed up at the distant stars, twinkling high overhead in a cloudless summer night sky. They were a beautiful sight, brighter and more alluring than the most flawless diamonds.
“Do all of them have planets orbiting them?” Ianto asked dreamily.
“No, and of the ones that do, many are uninhabitable, too close to the sun, or without an atmosphere, barren rock, or gas giants. But there are still millions of worlds out there where life has evolved in countless uniquely different ways.” Jack squeezed Ianto’s hand. “One day I’ll take you out there. We’ll travel among the stars, seeing the most amazing sights in the universe and meeting the people.”
“It sounds wonderful.”
“It is, you’re gonna love it. I’d take you tomorrow, but we don’t have a spaceship, and we have other responsibilities that have to take priority at present.”
Ianto smiled to himself. “We do, not that I’m complaining.”
“Me neither. We’ve got plenty of time for sightseeing.”
Soft slithering sounds alerted them to company, and a furry head loomed before their eyes.
“Humm.”
A strident wail reached their ears.
Jack chuckled. “We’re being summoned.”
“Better see what our daughter wants.”
