Midsummer in Cardiff, and outside the windows the rain was pouring down for the fifth day in a row. Venturing outside was out of the question; no one in their right mind would want to be out in that if they didn’t have to be.
Jack felt a little guilty, since there was a good chance that somewhere in Cardiff Ianto was getting soaked to the skin, but at the same time, he was glad he wasn’t the one running around chasing Weevils and collecting Rift junk. He’d done that yesterday, and it hadn’t been fun. It was only fair that Ianto took his turn.
It was ridiculous to think that he’d needed to turn the heating up and dress the kids in sweaters to keep them comfortably warm. The twins were still too young to mind having to stay indoors, perfectly happy throwing stuffed toys at each other, but Meriel had been looking forward to spending more time in the roof garden over the summer holidays. Instead, everywhere was muddy, the plants battered to the ground.
“When will it stop raining, Daddy?”
“I don’t know, sweetheart.”
Jack longed for the return of summer’s warmth as much as his daughter.
