New York had been sweltering in a heatwave for nearly two weeks, and if anything, today was hotter and muggier than ever. High humidity and temperatures pushing a hundred were making tempers fray.
Incidents of road rage were up, fights were breaking out on the street, in stores, in parks, and through it all, the cops of the NYPD were left trying to maintain order, even though they were just as hot, cranky, and fed up as everyone else.
“Our job sucks,” Dee grumbled. He and Ryo had just broken up a fight between two women over the last tub of ice cream in a convenience store’s freezer. The dumb thing was that the shopkeeper had tried repeatedly to tell them that he had more in the freezer out back and if they’d just give him a minute he’d re-stock, but instead of listening to him, one of the women had punched him in the eye and gone back to pulling her opponent’s hair, screeching that she was there first, so the ice cream was hers!
Separating the combatants hadn’t been easy. They’d kicked, and scratched, and struggled until Dee and Ryo had finally dragged them to opposite sides of the freezer and gotten them handcuffed. Even then they hadn’t stopped screaming and cursing at each other. One had sunk her teeth into Dee’s forearm and the other had stamped on Ryo’s foot with her stiletto heel. Thankfully, he was wearing good, solid shoes rather than sneakers. He’d be limping for a while, but no permanent damage had been done.
Hustling the two women from the shop and into the back seats of two patrol cars, the detectives left the uniformed officers to take the women back to the precinct.
Dee sighed. “All that over a tub of ice cream.”
