Walking into the file room, Ryo found his partner sitting hunched in front of one of the microfiche readers. At first he thought Dee was checking up on something, but then he realised the machine wasn’t turned on, the screen dark.
“Dee? What’re you doing down here?”
“Hiding, what does it look like?”
“Why would you need to hide? JJ stopped stalking you months ago. He’s happy with Drake.”
“JJ’s not the problem.”
“If it’s not JJ, then what is it? You’re not in trouble with the Chief again, are you?”
“What? NO! I’ve been on my best behaviour; he hasn’t yelled at me in weeks.”
That in itself was a minor miracle. The Chief always yelled at everyone, it was his way of communicating, but in the past he’d frequently singled Dee out for special attention.
“Then why exactly are you hiding? Not from me, I hope.”
“No, you dope! Didn’t you see who’s upstairs?” When Ryo still looked puzzled, Dee just looked at him. “Seriously? You didn’t notice? That Gorilla Nurse Emiry’s in the squad room!”
“Oh!” Ryo grinned. “Yes, I saw her. She’s doing the precinct’s flu vaccinations.”
“Her?” Dee groaned. “Might as well kill me now.”
